329,000 Affected By CPA Canada Phishing Attack
After falling victim to a successful phishing attack in April, CPA Canada has disclosed that personal information of their members and users of their website has been compromised. After concluding the initial investigation, the organization has determined that following the attack unauthorized third parties gained access to the website and compromised personal information of over 329,000 members. Those affected by the breach were primarily CPA Canada magazine subscribers and website users.

Last week an invoice was sent via email from someone posing as Corcoran’s assistant to her bookkeeper. The email fraudster was in communication with the bookkeeper as they went back and forth before a payment for a renovation was approved and sent for $388,700.

A spear phishing attack in November has resulted in the Waterloo Brewery Company losing a total of $2.1 million in fraudulent wire transfers. Although the brewery believes that their system was not breached and no personal data is at risk, the financial toll was immensely heavy.
BEC Phishing Scam Tricks City into Transferring $530K
A recent email phishing attack was deployed against the City of Burlington, where hackers were able to successfully trick staff members into thinking that they were dealing with established city vendors. By not cluing in on time, the city sent $503,000 to a falsified bank account. The government is now working on updating and implementing new protocols to prevent incidents like this from happening in the future.
2,841 Patients Impacted by Phishing Attack
Hackers were able to gain access to thousands of patients’ information stored on an employee’s email account. The employee was tricked into submitting his credentials to the hackers via an email that was originally thought to be from the company’s IT department. Nova Scotia Health Authority took nearly a month to size up the details of the data that was compromised and still cannot verify the specific data exposure.
